Poverty, Wealth and Health
By Abel Kubare, East Leeds Magazine, October 2011

Somebody turned forty last month. Perhaps life does not start at forty anymore, but it certainly is a time to reflect. A time to take a broad perspective: A time to count one’s blessings and spare a thought for those worse off.
We complain about our kids leaving school with neither a good command of the English language nor decent numeracy... Somebody makes a living out of criticising the nutritional content of school dinners... The NHS is supposedly dysfunctional and in dire need of a complete overhaul.

It’s 2011 on the civilised planet earth and there is still a child attending classes under a tree, under the guidance of an untrained teacher. The school is three miles away from home.. no pen, no school dinner. On a footpath a child stumbles on a rock and knocks a toe nail off. The foot is buried in sand to stop bleeding.. Tetanus? What Tetanus? There are no vaccines here, not even those to prevent childhood diseases. The birth of a child which should be the crowning glory of a young woman’s labour is often a precursor of sorrow. The child cries until it’s tired... There is no paracetamol syrup here. On a lucky day an adult’s paracetamol tablet is crushed in water and given. Sour taste is when there is choice. The pictures of starving Ethiopian children on the TV screen are true.

Labour is supposed to have got us into a mess. The Tories’ austerity measures are unbearable: Imagine life under THE caricature of an African dictator, somewhere in southern Africa, where a once fledging nation is now so ravished by poor governance that there is no longer a national currency. The education system is now feeble. Health care is in an intensive care unit. One knows where they’d rather be. Yes, we have reason to complain when we do. It’s Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. When basic necessities have been satisfied we yearn for more. Why settle for less..
