Dave Spence recalls 40 years
of football from the Manston Hotel.
East Leeds Magazine November 2012
On the first Sunday in September 1972 Manston Hotel played their first game under their manager and Founder Robert Waterhouse. Records show they won it, 4-3 away from home against Inter Kays. 40 years on there is still a Football club called Manston A.FC running from the old Manston Hotel where it all started.
The Pub has undergone many Changes and is now called the Barnbow Carvery. The Football Club has also undergone many changes in its 40 year history.
Robert and Mick Burnett ran the club until 1975 when they passed the baton to the late Les Farrar and his assistant Kenny Briggs. The late Colin Guest worked behind the scenes and carried out all the off field administration with the utmost precision. In some ways we had our glory years in the 80s under their stewardship, winning the Leeds Sunday League Senior B trophy and the following season the Senior A trophy. Les and Kenny were a formidable duo and continued to run the team for the next 20 years. Les then teamed up with ex player & goalkeeper Mally Roffe and between them, they inspired us on to win the ultimate prize of the Premiership title.
In 1999 a ladies team was started by one time original member Keith Dobby and his coach Paul Carr another ex Manston lad & current Veterans player. They too enjoyed success for a number of years and produced a couple of players who went on to play for Leeds United Ladies.
We also played host to an U8s team called Manston Juniors started by one time Ist team player & current Old Manstonians Veterans team member Rikki Whitaker.
In 1994 a second team was started by ex 1st team player Dave Spence and was managed by
ex Manston player Steve Hutchinson, they got to two cup finals winning one and losing one in the 93rd minute.
In 1996 they won the Arkendale Trophy. They also won the Division 1 title in the Harrogate and District league in 2001.
In 2002 Dave Spence and Steve Lyner teamed up and took over the first team who now play in the Leeds Sunday Combination League. They also delivered their fair share of success. Dave Spence moved aside allowing Manston legend Ian Rowell to team up with Steve Lyner and they won the Div. 2 title in 2008. Steve's managed the team for ten years now and along with Andy Mannion he's put a strong team together; They narrowly missed out in all 3 cup competitions last season which also saw the retirement of our Club Physio Harry Heaton after nearly 20 years service. If your reading this Harry thanks from everybody.
As previously mentioned there is also an over 40’s Veterans Football Team, which is now in its 11th season. Many of the original players have played for this team and it currently has 3 of the 1980’s Manston Hotel squad playing on a regular basis.
The Football club has always been run as a family affair and that goes some way to its longevity. The working partnership we have had with the Landlords & Managers from John Gale to current Manager Louisa Whitehead has always been one of mutual respect and long may it continue.
We currently run a first team and veterans team and are currently looking for a Sponsor for a 40th anniversary kit. If anyone reading this article is interested please contact Dave Spence who can usually be found at the bar in the Barnbow Carvery or in the unlikely event he is not there 07802872937. Apologies if anyone important has been missed but it has been hard trying to recollect all the memories.
Final mention has to go to those who were an integral part of this fine Football Club but who are no longer with us.
Colin Guest, Mick Regan, Les Farrar
